It is really a critique on the mass media and the way information about politics reaches the average citizen. Bias is a common denominator when it comes to "reporting the facts." To me, being a "political realist" in today's terms means accepting that we will never really know what is going on in the world. It centers on the idea that "trust" in IR is an obsolete notion. In a sense, the entire poem itself is expressing the ambiguity of the news media. It appears to have one message, yet underneath, it is telling an entirely different story.
A few people who read this poem today told me that their immediate reaction was to link it to last night's attacks in Gaza. Others asked if it was related to Israeli-Iranian conflicts... I remember that as I was writing it, I wanted to leave the poem's message open enough so that I wasn't pointing the reader towards one particular idea. Thus, any interpretation is appreciated!
