IS WORSE

Other

I have a lust to wander wide,
and follow each path to its end.
I'd be willing to lose prestige or wealth
but not to lose a friend

I could lose my train of thought one day
and spoil a line of verse.
I'd miss the chance to publish works;
to lose a friend is worse

I could lose the grace that charms my life
and fall beneath a curse
and watch my luck all turn to loss;
to lose a friend is worse

I could lose my sense on women wild
and have them clear my purse.
And feel the fool, and pauper too:
to lose a friend is worse

I could wearily wander the world alone,
in conditions most adverse
to lose your house and home is bad;
to lose a friend is worse

I could live without the crowds and mobs
and alone, the world traverse.
I could be shunned by every new face:
to lose a friend is worse

I could lose my mind and arms and legs,
and depend upon a nurse.
I's waste away in a hospital bed,
to lose a friend is worse

I could lose my cool and pick a fight
and wind up in a hearse.
To foolishgly lose one's life is bad;
to lose a friend is worse
