SPEAKING OF HIPSTERS

“i don’t like this place,” she said while stabbing the innocent ice cubes in her long island. ”fucking lame and depressing.”

i nodded, half listening. my eyes scanned the bar for signs of boys i had crushes on, or boys who i could develop crushes on. when i decided to give up momentarily, i looked back at her, hoping to revive my friend’s spirits somehow. i liked doing that - you know, turning the situation around and really “making the most out of things.” … sometimes.

on the other hand, i had taught myself by then to hate cliche things. that saying, for example: “make the most out of things.” it was one of those sentences that forced you to make those terrible, imaginary quotes with your two fingers around invisible words or phrases as you spoke. i had been taught that you should never have to physically signal the sarcasm in your spoken dialogue. if you did, it meant the person you were speaking to was daft.

she was still scowling at the people around the bar, so i visually circulated the same scene she surveyed. as my eyes moved, i began to see imaginary quotations surrounding almost every individual within the watering hole. walking cliches! everything from their heads to their toes was contrived. i looked into the window to see my reflection, and wondered if someone else was appropriating quotation marks around my head. i grabbed her by the wrist, slammed the last half of my highball, and tugged her towards the exit.
“let’s get the fuck out of here.”

This is your third story I've read, and this may come off as mean but I'm trying to be constructive. I don't understand why you don't capitalize words. I find that it hinders my reading, because I stop and notice every grammatical error. And I feel the story would flow better if I didn't get stopped on every mistake. But that's just my opinion.

i don't capitalize a lot because i often type from my phone and i'm just lazy! i really know how to capitalize, thanks for the input.

But shouldn't you have a very good reason to break with accepted normative grammar? Or is that just cliched?

hmm, i dunno, ask e.e. cummings. my personal motto: I DO WHAT I WANT. and that, my friends, needs to be capitalized.
