| Alan Moore's now famous comic book that Snyder doesn't want you to read. |
Come this Friday, there's one good reason for me to view the "Watchmen" movie. Because it's one movie by Zack Snyder that I won't have to worry about high-testosterone males pretending they're Greek and yelling "SPARTAAA!" in my face when they find out I'm Persian. Clearly my ancestors
survived the 300.
But for every one good reason that pops up to watch the Watchmen, Snyder gives me more reason not to. In an exclusive interview, Snyder told viewers
not to read the graphic novel before the movie. His reason? It fits within the confines of his egomaniac ideology. Or in his words: "I say don’t read the book! Only because — and this is selfish by me — we’ve all seen superhero movies, but for them to go in expecting what they expect from superheroes and their morality? All those things that ‘Watchmen’ is the opposite of? That experience is richer not knowing what’s coming."
This is "selfish" Snyder? Or do you just state the obvious for your loyal fans? Why don't you just admit "This is selfish but I don't want Alan Moore to get the satisfaction of surprising viewers with an original story." The truth is, I read 300
after the movie, and was pleased to see that the graphic novel was better than the movie which I didn't enjoy that much. Not because "the book is always better" but because there wasn't as much homophobia and racism as the movie focused on. For this reason I read Watchmen before the movie.
I'm all for adaptations or comic-book movies or any movie becoming a book. I have little qualms with it. Because for someone to expect a film to replace a book is like expecting postcards to replace tourism. Put the original before the inspiration, not the other way around. Hopefully, everyone around Snyder will have enough say in their respective jobs to create a great film, and I don't have to worry about him ruining the movie. ...Just direct the acting Snyder and leave the rest to the pros.
